The Showcase Awards were introduced in 2007 by Shorewood's Business Improvement District to recognize Shorewood businesses that make an important difference to the commercial vitality of the Village. Winners are acknowledged for their outstanding leadership, dedication and support of Shorewood’s business district. Please join us in saluting our 2008 Showcase Award winners, who were acknowledged at the Annual Meeting of the Shorewood Business Improvement District this fall.

BUSINESSES OF THE YEAR
Hubbard Park Lodge
Shorewood is proud to be the home to Hubbard Park Lodge, one of our country’s architectural treasures. Built during the Great Depression as part of a Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) program, the Lodge is one of only two identical structures that remain standing. Margaret Cibulka, owner of Culinary Artists Ltd., a specialty catering service, has operated the Lodge since 1986, providing catering for weddings and other special events and also opening it to the public for Sunday brunch and Friday dinners. With help from various community groups such as the Shorewood Men’s Club and the Shorewood Foundation, along with the Village of Shorewood, Margaret has lovingly restored the Lodge with new lighting, an outdoor veranda, interior upgrades and new landscaping. We salute Margaret Cibulka and Hubbard Park Lodge for bringing special memories to generations of Shorewood residents.

Tim Hart, D.D.S.
Dr. Tim Hart is a skilled prosthodontist who located his practice in Shorewood in 1996 at 1720 E. Lake Bluff. Besides his expertise in dentistry, Dr. Hart’s other passion is cycling. He has been an active supporter and sponsor of Shorewood’s Criterium International Cycling Classic, held each July in Shorewood’s business district. He serves on the bike race committee and has been the co-title sponsor (along with Rainbow Jersey Bicycles) for the past four years. Dr. Hart has made another important investment in the community through his participation in the Village's Façade Improvement Program. In 2005, he renovated the exterior of his commercial building with improved signs, landscaping and masonry restoration. Thank you, Dr. Hart, for adding to the vitality of Shorewood.

Harleys: The Store for Men
Harleys is celebrating six decades of doing business at its original location on North Oakland Ave. and Capitol Dr. Tim Ryan, president and owner since 1999, is committed to continuing Harleys’ reputation as a Milwaukee destination for fashion-conscious men by providing distinctive menswear, personal attention and unparalleled customer service. Harleys shares it success through the support of many local charities including its annual golf outing to benefit the Great Lakes Hemophilia Foundation and participating in fashion shows to benefit causes such as the Boys and Girls Club of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Symphony and Gilda’s Club. Ryan is the president of the Shorewood Business Improvement District, and Harleys has been a sponsor of the Criterium International Cycling Classic since its inception.

This quiet company makes a major impact by providing a wide range of professional care management and care-giving services to elderly and disabled adults and their families. Founded in 1983, Stowell Associates has called Shorewood home for 23 years, working with sensitivity and respect to assist clients in making informed decisions for their loved ones. A few years ago, co-founders Phyllis Brostoff and Valerie Stefanich made a major investment in Shorewood with the purchase of space for their headquarters in The Metropolitan at the corner of Oakland Ave. and Kensington Blvd. The company is also is a strong supporter of the business district as a sponsor of many special events, including the Criterium and the Holiday Shopwalk. FACADE IMPROVEMENT OF THE YEAR: Catholic Family Life Insurance
Catholic Family Life Insurance is celebrating a proud past of 140 years while sharing the challenges of the future. The national headquarters of Catholic Family Life Insurance has been located in Shorewood at 1572 E. Capitol Dr. for more than three decades. Catholic Family gives its generous support to many Village ventures, including the Men’s Club Chicken Bar-B-Q, National Night Out and sponsorship of the Shorewood Concert Band. Their commitment to Shorewood is also evident in major investments in renovation to their property. Two years ago, the offices were updated with new lighting and redecorated in rich, soothing earth tones. The parking lot has been resurfaced and, with help from Shorewood’s Façade Improvement program, new signage captures the building’s tone and architecture. We’re very pleased to have Catholic Family Life Insurance as a good citizen in Shorewood.

North Shore Bank: 85 Years and Going Strong
North Shore Bank has come a long way from its humble beginnings in Shorewood in the back of an East Capitol Drive hardware store in the early 1920s. Today, it is one of the strongest banks in the Midwest and a nationally respected leader in the banking community.

Hubbard Park Lodge Celebrates 70 Years
Hubbard Park Lodge is nestled in a lovely setting along the Milwaukee River in Hubbard Park in Shorewood. The history of the Lodge and the park dates back more than a century. Way back then, long before anyone thought of water parks, Milwaukeeans were enjoying entertainment at popular spots along the Milwaukee River at restaurants, a beer garden, an amusement park, a motorcycle racing dome, and even a giant water slide.

In the early 1900s, the Village of Shorewood purchased some of the property for a park and named it in honor of William J. Hubbard, a highly respected Village Board President. Construction for Hubbard Park Lodge began in 1936 during the Great Depression as a Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, and completed in 1938 at a cost of about $30,000. It is one of 13 identical structures built across the United States during this era, and one of only two left standing (the other houses the United States Department of Agriculture’s research station outside Washington, D.C.)

The Village of Shorewood managed the Lodge for many years working with a number of concessionaires, and over the years Hubbard Park Lodge became a place where memories were made at dances, teas and other special events. Since 1986, the Lodge has been operated by Margaret Cibulka, owner of Culinary Artists Ltd., a specialty catering service well-known for excellent catering for weddings, meetings, business functions and other events. The Lodge is also open to the public for Sunday brunch and Friday dinner. “New memories are being made at Hubbard Lodge and we’re very pleased to be continuing the tradition,” says Margaret. And the Village of Shorewood is proud to be the home of one of the country’s architectural treasures.

Harleys: The Store for Men Celebrating 60 Years of Retail Excellence
Harleys: The Store for Men in Shorewood, Wisconsin, is celebrating six decades as a Milwaukee destination for fashion-conscious men. Harleys was founded in 1948 by brothers Harold and Stanley Dubman (who combined their first names to christen their store). Tim Ryan, Harleys’ current owner, was born the same year Harleys was founded, and while a student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee he started working in the store. By 1987, when the Dubmans were ready to sell, Tim was well-prepared to take over and Ryan and former business partner, Tom Brill, jumped at the opportunity to be co-owners. When Brill retired in 1999, Ryan became president and sole owner.

Today Harleys is one of the leading men’s specialty stores in Wisconsin. While men’s fashions have seen trends such as leisure suits, Nehru jackets, bell-bottom pants and disco dressing, Harleys has succeeded by staying the course with the finest menswear for office, casual or formal occasions. Harleys describes its merchandise as “handsome, quality garments that have no fear of time.” The shop has a complete selection for the discriminating male: shirts to shoes, outerwear to underwear, suits and sweaters, slacks and sportcoats and everything in between.

The cornerstone of Harleys’ success is personal attention. “We have an unwavering commitment to superior customer service,” Tim says, “including our own in-house tailors who have crafted garments for Harleys for years.”

An important part of Harleys’ mission is supporting the community. The store stages its own annual golf outing to benefit the Great Lakes Hemophilia Foundation, and participates in numerous fashion shows to benefit causes including the Boys and Girls Club of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Symphony and Gilda’s Club. Tim is the president of the Shorewood Business Improvement District.
