On Tuesday, July 8th at 7:00 PM the next program called "Jest for Fun" will feature The Reed Marionettes. Joint the Reed's robot stage manager as he tries to keep the puppeteer from goofing up. Meet the rare "Flugalhonker" bird and help him get over his shyness. Enjoy a performance by the world's oldest and smallest musician. you can even learn how to deal with pesky insects from a very small (but expert) gardener. It's all. . . Jest for Fun!

Golden Living Center Provides $1,000 Grant to Brown Deer Library!

Great news from the Golden Living Center at 6735 W. Bradley Rd.! Sales and Marketing Director Mary Lindsey has announced that a $1,000 Grant will be given to the Brown Deer Public Library to expand their Alzheimer's, Caregiving, Nursing Home Care and Aging issues items in the Library. A number of items have been selected in various formats: Books, DVD's and Spoken Word CD's (Audiobooks). This helps our collection provide the very latest information in these rapidly growing areas of concern.

The Brown Deer Public Library will be hosting Art from all public schools in Brown Deer over the next three weeks. From -April 24-May 1st Dean School Art is featured in the Library Community Room, May 2nd -May 8th Brown Deer Middle School Art is featured and from May 9th-May 15th Brown Deer High School Art is featured. The entire large room is completely filled with Art from the ceiling to all the walls. Stop in and view all this fine work!

2008 Friends of the Brown Deer Library Annual Plant Sale

Geraniums! Impatiens! Million Bells! Begonias! Salvias! Fuschias! And Lots More! The 11th annual Friends of the Brown Deer Library Plant Sale is being held now and will continue through April 26th. Pre-order your plants and flowers by picking up an order blank at the Brown Deer Library, 5600 W. Bradley Rd., Brown Deer,WI 53223. Order Pick-Up day is Saturday, May 17th from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Brown Deer Library parking Lot at 5600 W. Bradley Rd. In addition to the beautiful annuals, new for 2008 are perennials! (some perennials are: Hollyhocks, Asters, Spireas, Hostas, Coneflowers, Iris, Lavender, Decorative Grasses! And many more) A more complete description (size, color, growing condition) of each flower/plant is available at the Library. All plants are provided by Shady Lane Greenhouses, Menomonee Falls. All proceeds support the Brown Deer Library.

2008 Summer Reading Programs!

5 great programs will be held at the Brown Deer Library this summer as part of the "Catch the Reading Bug" program for kids and families. All will be held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM during June and July, the dates and performers are as follows:

June 17th "Bugs on Stage" performed by Nature In the Parks

June 24th "Storyteller" performed by Kathy Luck

July 8th "Reed Marionettes" performed by Tim Reed

July 15th "Able the Dancing Chihuahua" performed by "Able" and Amy Ammen

July 29th "Good Morning Grumpus Caterpillar" performed by the Atwood Players

The "Catch the Reading Bug" Summer Reading Program starts on June 16th and continues until August 9th. Children 12 years and younger will be able to earn valuable coupons for various attractions in the Milwaukee Metro Area by signing up and reading at least 10 books or ,for younger children, having 10 books read to them. If larger books are chosen the time spent reading can be recorded for credit as well.

Public Library Survey!

Come in to the Library and fill out a survey, or fill one out online. "The Economic Impact of the Wisconsin Public Library System" is the title of a survey questionnaire being compiled by Northstar Economics Inc It shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes to complete and the data will assist the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to study the economic impact of public libraries. If you prefer, you may complete the survey online at www.northstareconomics.com by March 21st. Thanks!

Catch the Reading Bug! (this summer)

Believe me, there will come a time when the grass will be green again. birds will sing, and flowers will bloom. that time is called "Not Winter" in Wisconsin, otherwise known as Spring and Summer. This Summer the theme for the 2008 Summer Reading Program for children is "Catch The Reading Bug!" Various programs and performers will be scheduled from June 16-August 9. Children 12 years and younger will be able to earn valuable coupons for various attractions in the Milwaukee Metro area. The schedule of programs and events will be available at the Library in late May.

Skins & Scales on Saturday Feb. 23rd!

The Friends of the Brown Deer Library present the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center's program "Skins and Scales" on Saturday, February 23rd at 11:00 AM. Live reptiles and amphibians will help you enjoy an interactive presentation that focuses on the world of snakes, turtles, and lizards. Artifacts and live animals are used in this presentation for all ages. Join Schlitz Audubon Naturalist, Jackie Keltner, as we discover the many interesting facts of our skin and scaly friends. If you dare, you may pick up an animal! The program is free and open to the public.

Join us for stories and crafts!

Library story hours for pre-school children resume on Mondays, january 28 and Wednesdays, January 30th.

The Monday story hours are for Parents and children from 10:30AM-11:30 AM from January 28th through April 21st (no story hour on March 31st).

The Wednesday story hours are for Parents/Caregivers and children from 10:30 AM-11:30 AM from January 30th through April 23rd (no story hour on April 2nd).

You may register your child when you attend the first week, registration is necessary to help us determine the amount of craft supplies for future sessions.

New Thursday library hours

We had been opening at 1:00 PM but now we will be able to serve everyone in the morning as well.

So, 2008 business hours will be: Monday 10:00 AM-8:30 PM, Tuesday 1:00 PM-8:30 PM, Wednesday 10:00 AM-8:30 PM, Thursday 10:00 AM-8:30 PM, Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM, Saturday 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, Sunday--Closed

$2,418 was raised as proceeds from the 2007 Annual Goods & Services Auction hosted by the Friends of the Brown Deer Library. John Bartel was the auctioneer. John received a certificate and plaque honoring his 20th year as auctioneer. John did his usual great job. The community room was packed and the evening went quickly lasting from 6:30-9:30 PM. Many many thanks to all the donors and successful bidders!

Come One! Come All! to the annual Fall Goods & Services Auction from the Friends of the Brown Deer Public Library! The Auction this year will be held on Thursday evening, November 8th at 6:30 PM (a bit earlier than previous years), preview will be at 6:00 PM. Lots of items, sports events tickets, overnight hotel stays, restaurant certificates, home decor items, china and crystal, collectibles, children's toys, books, crafts and those special Library Friends Muffins! Admission is Free and Refreshments will be provided. All proceeds benefit the Brown Deer Public Library.

Yay! Target Grant received by Brown Deer Library

Summer is a Fun time to read and now kids will get the support and encouragment they need to begin and keep the spirit going from Target!

Brown Deer Library today announced a partnership with Target in recognition of its efforts in fostering a lifelong love of reading in children. The grant of $1,000 will be used to sponsor the Summer Children's Reading Program in 2008. This program will service approximately 250 children from pre-school up to 12 years old in the Brown Deer area.

The Grant was made possible by the efforts of the Friends of the Brown Deer Library. They took the effort in finding the funding source and preparing the grant. The continuing efforts of the Friend's organization has enabled the Brown Deer Library to remain one of the State's leading public libraries in its population category.

The Grant is part of ongoing effots by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the United States. Since opening its doors, Target has given 5% of its income to organizations that support education, the arts and safe families and communities. The grant will definitely make a difference in the lives of children who participate in the program.

The Summer Reading Program has always been supported by donation funding, primarily by The Friends of the Brown Deer Library, these new funds, which will be used to pay for programming costs and supplies for the 2008 Summer Children's Reading Program, may allow the freeing up of additional donation funding to provide other items and services for the Brown Deer Library such as supplementing the book collection and other items/services.

Fall Story time for pre-schoolers at Brown Deer Public Library

Join us for stories and crafts! Fall story times for pre-schoolers will be held on Mondays from 10:30-11:30 AM, September 17- December 3rd for Parents and Children. Also on Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30 AM September 19-December 5th for Parents/Caregivers and Children. Please register your child for the story time on the first week they attend so we can purchase enough craft supplies for future sessions. There will be no story times on November 19th and 21st due to Thanksgiving holiday. At this time no story times are planned for Saturdays due to low attendance.

Julie Andrews on Libraries

Recently, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the American Libraries magazine Julie Andrews was interviewed on libraries. She said, "In today's media and electronically driven world. I feel that children run the risk of becoming very isolated. I worry that we are spoon-feeding our young people such a steady diet of manufactured slices of life that all they have to do is receive rather than participate in any way. The joy of reading is that it asks us to engage , to use our imaginations and to play an active role in our environment."
