"Sky Hunters - Birds of Prey" here on March 7!

The Friends of the Brown Deer Library, in conjunction with the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, present "Sky Hunters - Birds of Prey"!

This captivating presentation will feature Nala - a peregrine falcon; Orion - a barred owl; Ochre - a screech owl; R.T. - a red-tailed hawk; and Tallulah - a turkey vulture.

In this participatory program, all the birds will be closely observed as handlers take these magnificient raptors through the audience. Artifacts will be available to touch and compare to the live birds. Be sure to bring your questions for the bird handlers, Barb and Ken Wardius.

When: Saturday March 7, 2009, starting at 11:00 AM

Where: Brown Deer Public Library

Who: Free and open to the public! For young and old alike!

Interested in discussing this book? Just register for the Adult Book Club at the reference desk, and check out a copy of the book at the circulation desk. A number of copies of the book have been set aside just for the Adult Book Club. Then read the book and come ready to have a fun and lively discussion. Some refreshments will be provided.

Jorian Clarke from KidsCom.com will be here on Tuesday, Feburary 24th at 7:00 pm to show you how!

Jorian Clarke will be providing a demonstration for kids and their parents on how to create an energy-efficient playhouse on KidsCom.com. During the demonstration parents will hear how playing games on KidsCom.com translates into behaviors that save energy dollars at home! 

KidsCom.com is a kid-friendly website where you can play games, build a virtual world, and learn how to take care of our environment.

KidsCom.com is a free virtual world for kids (target age 8-14). Kids join teams and play games to save the fictional Planet Sarillion and animals. Kids use their game points to buy eco-friendly furniture to decorate their virtual houses, care for Plant Baby virtual pets, and much more. Virtual pets are based on character education such as Patience, Persistence, Hope, Humor and Balance.

Lincoln Born 200 Years Ago Today...

Today we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth.

Lincoln warned the South in his Inaugural Address: "In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you.... You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it." - http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/presidents/abrahamlincoln/

Born on February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, Lincoln had to struggle with both making a living and learning before he became our country's 16th president. He married Maria Todd and had four sons, but only one lived to maturity.

As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization. Further, he rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy.

Lincoln never let the world forget that the Civil War involved an even larger issue. This he stated most movingly in dedicating the military cemetery at Gettysburg: "that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain--that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth, an actor, who somehow thought he was helping the South. The opposite was the result, for with Lincoln's death, the possibility of peace with magnanimity died.
