Medallion Quest: Ultimate Challenge 2008

By Park & Recreation Department
Monday, Aug 4 2008, 10:20 AM

We are so excited that you have decided to join us for the Great Medallion Quest: Ultimate Challenge!!!  With almost 30 families willing to take the challenge, this race will be a hot one!!!  Listed below are a few instructions you will need to be able to participate in this exciting event!  Remember, the Quest begins today, August 4, and will continue until Friday, August 15!  Be assured, the Quest will not end when one person finds the Medallion, but will continue through the end date!  This gives all of our participants a better chance to follow those clues, and gain the full experience of the Ultimate Quest!!!

For participants returning to Medallion, the Quest: Ultimate Challenge is quite different from any previous year.  Let me outline some of the rules and changes:

  1. The Quest lasts only 2 weeks, Monday, August 4 – Friday, August 15.
  2. Clues will be given on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.
  3. Clues will not be sent over email, but will instead be posted to the Germantown Park and Recreation blog.  You can access this at:  www.germantownnow.com
  4. Clues will be harder than ever.
    1. You will be required to visit two parks each day.  The first park will be given to you over the blog post, and the second park will have to be “decoded” from the clue you find in the first park!
    2. In addition, their will be a special reward envelope for the first family to reach each second park.  This envelope should be TAKEN by that first family, and will provide an extra hint to the exact whereabouts of the Medallion that no one else will receive.
  5. Locations will not only be reserved to Germantown parks, but will also encompass Menomonee Falls and Washington County parks.
    1. To help narrow down the choices, a list of possible parks follows.  If a park is not listed, it is not an option and will not contain a clue!

Germantown Parks:  All parks are fair game!

Menomonee Falls Parks: Kiwanis Park, Lime Kiln Park, Menomonee River Parkway, Mill Pond Plaza, Mill Pond Park, Municipal Park, Oakwood Park, Old Falls Village, Rivers Edge Park, Riverside Park, Rotary Park, Willowood Park, and Village Park are all fair game!

Washington County Parks: Ackerman’s Grove, Family Park, Glacier Hills, Heritage Trails, Homestead Hollow, and Sandy Knoll are all fair game!

On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, you will need to go to the Germantown Park and Recreation blog to get your clues.  From there, you follow what the clues ask of you, and see what adventures they will take you on!

Please Note: You will need to take paper and a pencil to write down the clue’s information... the clues will remain in their positions for the duration of their time- no one should remove a clue from it’s spot (with the exception of the reward envelopes)…

Please refer to the safety guidelines below, and good luck to you all!

The Medallion will not be found:

1. In a body of water

2. In a locked building, fenced area or enclosure

3. Near an electrical source

4. In any flower plantings

5. Off a non-traditional trail.

NOTE: Be prepared to pull out all the stops on this Ultimate Medallion Quest.  We have left nothing to chance!!!

Another wonderful track season has come to a close.  The children had fun, used up some of their energy, and parents cheered them on as they ran, jumped and/or threw.  All this would not have been possible without the help of our amazing coaches.  Thank you so much to all of you especially to Coach Cynthia and Jeff De Vor for running the program.  You all did such an awesome job!!!

Do you like playing with your camera?  Do you like to win things?  The Germantown Recreation Department has just the thing for you.  We are looking for your photos for our “Take Time for Fun” Photo Contest.  Send us your pictures of Park & Recreation events or within Germantown Parks and see if you’ve got what it takes.

The first place photo will be featured on the cover of an upcoming brochure and receive a prize basket.  Second place will make an appearance in an upcoming brochure and receive a prize basket.  Third place will make an appearance in an upcoming brochure.

To submit a photo:

  • Photos MUST be submitted by email to parkrec@village.germantown.wi.us
  • Include your name, address, phone number, date photo was taken, location and a short description (include names of participants if applicable)

  • REMEMBER: ONLY PHOTOS OF PARK & REC EVENTS OR WITHIN GERMANTOWN PARKS WILL BE ACCEPTED
Tips to keep in mind when considering an entry:

  • Scenery photos do well – we would love to see amazing pictures of our parks
  • When taking pictures of individuals try to get close if you are featuring them doing something intricate.
Get your photos in soon!  The entry deadline is Friday, June 27th.

Teen Adventure Trips and Activities

By Park & Recreation Department
Wednesday, May 28 2008, 04:29 PM

Calling all teens…the Recreation Department and Youth Futures have teamed up to offer some very exciting opportunities for you to take part in this summer.  The teen adventure trips and activities include a Brewer game, Country Springs Water Park, Great America, introduction to disc golf and a disc golf cookout party.

The Brewers trip includes a ticket for the game against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday, July 10 as well as tailgating before the game and bus transportation.  The seats are located at the 200 level.  This whole day of fun only costs $26 for Germantown residents and $39 for non-residents and school district residents.

The Country Springs Water Park trip includes bus transportation, a pizza lunch and water park entrance.  Come along and enjoy such things as a three person boat ride, lazy river, water basketball and tube slides.  The fee to cover this entire day is $25 for residents and $38 for non-residents and school district residents.  It is a nice way to end the summer on August 12th.

Great America is going to be a day of fun in the sun on Tuesday, July 8th.  With the registration fee, you get entrance into Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor as well as bus transportation.  Make sure you bring a bag lunch, towel, swimsuit and sunscreen.  All this can be yours for $46 if you are a resident and $68 if you are a non-resident or school district resident.

Chaperones for the three trips get everything for free, but they must be at least 18 years old.  The maximum number needed for each trip is four so hurry or all the spots will be gone!

Two activities for teens that we have this summer are disc golf related.  Come learn how to play at Spassland Park.  This is a fast growing sport; don’t miss your chance to become a part of it.  On July 14th & 21st, you will learn a brief history of the sport, some basic throwing styles and the rules you need to play this exciting game.  This only costs $29 if you are a resident and $43 if you are a non-resident or school district resident.  Plus you get your own disc to keep!

The disc golf cookout party is for all levels of players on Wednesday, June 25.  Just starting out or already an expert?  Come and join us for some games and lunch at Spassland Park.  It is only $6 for residents and $9 for non-residents and school district residents.

More information for any of these events can be found in the recreation department’s summer programs brochure or by calling (262)250-4710.  Don’t miss out on these amazing experiences!

Germantown Recreation Department‘s Arbor Day Celebration

By Park & Recreation Department
Friday, May 9 2008, 03:25 PM

While it has been over 130 years since Arbor Day was founded, the simple idea of setting aside a special day for tree planting is now more important than ever.  On Friday, May 9th Germantown Kids Klub spent several hours planting trees at Friedenfeld Park.  Over 50 participants ages 5-12 took part in the event.  The kids spent time planting crab apple & maple trees as well as participating in a forestry class instructed by Park & Recreation Commission Member, Mary Ellen Gray.

The Recreation Department and the Kids Klub Program felt that it was important to do their part to help plant trees that will last generations.  For additional information on volunteer opportunities you can take part in contact the Recreation Department Office at 250-4710.
